As with any large city, there's a massive choice of big-brand hotels and motels throughout the area. There are also characterful, individual hotels in the Downtown area which the Travelsavvy hotel guide focuses on.
Denver luxury hotels
The Brown Palace is, without a doubt, the most interesting hotel in Denver. It was completed in 1892 and is designed in Italian Renaissance style. It's even worth a visit if you are in the area (it's at 321 17th Street) and you can get information on the hotel's design, construction materials and history at reception.
The hotel's Palace Arms restaurant is one of the finest in Denver while there is a pub-like alternative in the Ships Tavern.
The Oxford Alexis Hotel is also an elegant spot to stay on the corner of 17th and Wazee. Built in 1891, the hotel originally served rail passengers. Today, the 81-room hotel has been beautifully restored, with period French and English antiques in every room. A gem of a place to drink is the Cruise Room, an Art Deco beauty with a long curving bar.
Located in LoDo, it's within walking distance of the Denver Downtown attractions, including the 16th Street Mall.
Loews Hotel, to the south of Downtown, is in dramatic black tower but inside is in a luxurious Italian style and also offers free parking. It features 183 guest rooms and 17 suites and the award winning Tuscany restaurant.
The Warwick, at 17th and Grant, is a high-rise with excellent facilities. The hotel boasts the most spacious rooms in Downtown Denver, the majority of which have private balconies with floor to ceiling glass windows offering impressive views of either Downtown, or the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The rooms are decorated in an elegant European style with fine antiques and marble.
Denver moderate hotels
Queen Ann: Facing quiet Benedict Fountain Park in the Clement Historic District of Downtown Denver, this has been the premier urban bed and breakfast inn since 1987. The Queen Anne has 14 guest rooms, four of them two-room gallery suites named for famous painters of bygone days (Audubon, Calder, Remington and Rockwell) and showing selected examples of their work. There are 10 double rooms.
Housed in two Victorians built from 1879 to 1886, all the rooms are individually decorated with period antiques. Seven have special tubs, and two have fireplaces. Within easy walking distance of the State Capitol, US Mint and 16th Street Pedestrian Mall, Convention Center, the Queen Ann has a quiet friendly atmosphere.
Denver budget hotels
Denver International Youth Hostel is at 630 E 6th Avenue. The Downtown YMCA at 25 E 6th Street, near to the State Capitol, also offers inexpensive rooms.
Denver camping
There's a huge choice of campgrounds in the mountains to the west of Denver, but nearer the city there are a couple of options. The Chief Hosa Campground is just off I-70 at Exit 253 or the Denver-North Campground is off I-25 at Exit 229
